The reference price range, also known as latitude of price acceptance, denotes one spread measure around the reference price. The width of the latitude of price acceptance depends on the three main factors – acceptable price level, purchase frequency and brand loyalty (Gurumurthy Kalyanaram & Little, 1994). Lichtenstein, Bloch, and Black (1988) found that reference price level and knowledge about prices significantly affect the latitude of acceptance. They suggest that higher reference price leads to wider latitude of acceptance. Consumers with greater knowledge of price distributions of the brands are more likely to observe deviations from their reference prices, thus leading to narrow latitude of price acceptance. Similarly, Rao and Sieben (1992) found that moderately knowledgeable consumers display wider latitude of price acceptance than more knowledgeable consumers.

Prospect theory (Kahneman&Tversky, 1979; Thaler, 1985) shows that consumers react sharply and adversely to perceived losses, and less favourably to perceived gains.  This principle has found many business applications. For example, Barberis, Huang, and Santos (2001) show that investors react more sharply to losses in investment portfolio. There is asymmetric response to perceived fluctuations in wealth.

The asymmetric response has found wide applications in marketing, and particularly in pricing. Natarajan, Gurumurthy Kalyanaram, and Munch (2010) have shown such responses to new product announcements.

China filed a criminal lawsuit against Uighur scholar IlhamTohti charging with separatism, a very serious crime in China.  After two days of trial, the Court in China has upheld the charge and has found against Tohti in lawsuit filed by the State.  And now Tohti faces life imprisonment.  Tohti’s case has received great attention from media, policy makers, human right activists, legal scholars and lay men and women.

The background to the lawsuit is as follows.  A start-up telecom company based in US got a license in 2004 to operate in Liberia. The license was for the entire suite of telecom services.  As part of its launch preparation, the start-up explored a collaborative with a China-based telecom company to supply hardware.  The two telecom companies engaged in substantial conversation, and the both signed a Non-Disclosure Agreement.

On Religious Freedom, Town of Greece v. Galloway Gurumurthy Kalyanaram Lawsuit

Galloway and several other residents filed a lawsuit complaining that his freedom of religious expression was violated by his town, Greece in New York, because the town board regularly began its meetings with a Christian-faith based prayer. This reportdiscusses the recent US Supreme Court decision which addressed whether the scope of the anti-retaliation provision of Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002.Specifically, whether Section 806 of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX) (codified at 18 U.S.C. § 1514A) limits protection from retaliation to the employees of public companies, or if it also covers employees of contractors to a public company and if the said contractors can file a lawsuit under the anti-retaliation provisions of SOX.

A long line of decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals (Second Circuit), and New York Court of Appeals, have held that, where a decision-maker makes a finding, the finding is not collateral estoppel in a subsequent proceeding unless the finding was material and decisive to the decision, even if it was raised and litigated, particularly where the decision-maker himself explicitly states that the issue was “immaterial” to his decision, and that if there is any uncertainty at all, collateral estoppel shall not apply.

Dr Gurumurthy Kalyanaram - Director of UT Dallas COHORT MBA Program

Dr Gurumurthy Kalyanaram was the founding-director of the full-time, daytime MBA program, Cohort MBA Program.  In 1995, Dr. Kalyanaram was appointed as the founding-director to conceptualize, design, and develop a new full-time, daytime MBA program.  Till then, UT Dallas offered only evening business programs for working adults.  It was decided that the university should offer a full-time day time MBA program – Cohort MBA program – in the Cohort format.  The goal was to design a high-quality and diverse MBA program in terms of students, faculty, curriculum, training and placement of students.  The Cohort MBA program now stands as a viable program, and UT Dallas is ranked as one of the 50-100 business schools in the country.

Major curricular design was undertaken.  Distinguished speakers series was started.  Scholarship funds were instituted.  The first class of 30 students started the program in 1996.

Dr Kalyanaram designed the curriculum (Innovation, Knowledge Economy), recruited the faculty and students, developed industry relations for placement, managed the budget, and led the Cohort MBA Program to be one of the top MBA programs in the country.
